“When Jesus first gave what we now call the sermon on the Mount, he was staging something that would look to us much more like a political rally. He was like someone drumming up support for a new movement, a new great cause”– N. T. Wright (From the Original Jesus)
When Jesus of Nazareth walked the face of this earth over 2000 years ago, his message lived out in his 1st century context was radical to say the least. He refused to accept the status quo and and instead called his hearers to accept his message and repent for the kingdom of God was at hand. Since Constantine in the 3rd century, the message of the radical Jesus has been pushed to the margins until now. See for example the Nicene Creed of 381 that skipped over the life of Jesus altogether and only talked about his birth and death. After all who needs such a radical message and lifestyle when the union between the church and political establishment is doing just fine thank you! Jesus called for a new social order that was brought about through obedience to his teaching and lifestyle. He was a revolutionary in a different way not like the Zealots of his day or like the Bin Ladens of the 21st century. He was willing to die for his mission because he knew that it was in his message and life that redemption of the created order resided. We live at a time when the radical Jesus is making a come back, what an exciting time to be a Christian!
